SUMMARY:Philanthropy WV: Philanthropy’s Ethical Leadership in Economic Crisis
DESCRIPTION:hosted by Philanthropy WV and The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation\nGenerously sponsored by The Maier Foundation\, Inc.  \n[REGISTER]\nA Visit & Guest Presentation with\nRip Rapson\, President & CEO of The Kresge Foundation of Troy\, MI\n(For Mr. Rapson’s full bio\, visit here: http://kresge.org/sites/default/files/Uploaded%20Docs/Rip-Rapson-bio2015.pdf) \nThe progress of any town\, city\, county or state relies on a strong base of sector leadership including Private (business\, industry\, and labor)\, Public (local\, county\, state\, and federal government)\, and Independent (philanthropy and nonprofits).  If these three sectors are strong\, we see economic progress\, civic growth\, and overall quality of life improvement.  When one is weak or collapses\, the others are challenged to step up to lead and assist with a community’s revitalization\, preservation and growth. \nThis role of philanthropy’s ethical leadership\, in WV or elsewhere\, is key in good times and in bad. To demonstrate how the sectors of community-economic development\, government\, business\, and many others can work together for progress\, Philanthropy WV and the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation are thrilled to host Rip Rapson\, President & CEO of The Kresge Foundation. \nMr. Rapson will provide an energizing and insightful breakfast presentation on Thursday\, April 30th at Four Points by Sheraton in Charleston\, WV.  Mr. Rapson will discuss the city of Detroit and the role Ethical Leadership Foundations played in partnering with the private and public sectors to revitalize his community\, region and state. The cost is $20/person for Philanthropy WV/WVNPA Members and $30.00/person for Non-Members. \nHe will share his experiences of recovery from the Great Recession in Michigan\, The Kresge Foundation’s work to bring different sectors together for progress\, and share insights from his time at the McKnight Foundation.  You will be surprised to see that WV and Michigan have in common\, especially as we move our states forward for economic prosperity. \nThis program is part of Philanthropy WV’s 2015 Launching Solutions in the Mountain State Series. \n[REGISTER]

SUMMARY:VolunteerWV: Strength-Based Grant Writing
DESCRIPTION:Strength-Based Grant Writing is intended to help build new capacity for nonprofit organizations. This hands-on\, intensive training will help aspiring and experienced grant writers approach grant writing from a strength-based perspective. Strength-based grant writing seeks collaboration\, shared understanding\, and commitment to action by the organization and the larger community in identifying opportunities for change and new direction. At the end of this training\, participants will not only understand all the components of a grant application\, but will also have a new way of looking appreciatively at what works in their organization and community. \nMore than 300 people have attending this workshop since its inception. One participant recently wrote: \nI had the absolute pleasure of participating in your Strength Based Grant Writing Workshop this past October. I cannot express to you how extraordinary and worthwhile I found the entire process. \nSo far\, my organization has been approved for two of the grants that I have written – there is no doubt in my mind this would not have been feasible without the tools and knowledge I gained through your workshop.” \nCome and join the growing network of nonprofit professionals approaching grant writing from this unique and energizing perspective. Registration is limited to the first 50 people. \nWe will be asking questions such as: \n\nWhat are our organization’s strengths? What can we build on? What makes us unique? How do we use our strengths to get results?\nWhat are our stakeholders asking for? How can we reframe challenges to be seen as exciting opportunities? What new skills do we need to move forward?\nWhat do we care deeply about? What do we want more of? What strategic initiatives would support our aspirations?\nWhat meaningful measures would indicate that we are on track to achieving our goals?\n\nWhat resources are needed to implement our most vital projects? \nWVU Continuing Education Certificate in Nonprofit Management \nThis training is approved for the WVU Continuing Education Certificate in Nonprofit Management. SUMMARY:WVU: Ethical Challenges of Social Work Supervision
DESCRIPTION:April 9\, 2015\, 9am-4pm\, WVU-Eastern Division\, Erma Byrd Health Professionals Center\, Multimedia Room\, Martinsburg\, WV \nEthical Challenges of Social Work Supervision \nPatricia Chase\, LCSW\, EdD\, Clinical Associate Professor\, WVU School of Social Work \nCEUs: 6 Social Work hours (approved for 6 SW ethics hours); 6 GPC hours (Skill Area: Management); 6 CECNPM hours (Core Area: Human Resource Development – Management) \nRegistration Fee: $65 (Early bird rate of $58.50 by March 20\, 2015) \nTarget Audience:  All levels of practitioners \nEthical practice in social work supervision carries with it a number of familiar and new challenges that can require thoughtful and reflective practice to successfully navigate. Working with power imbalances\, assessing and ensuring worker competence in the midst of high work demands\, managing dual relationships and role changes\, providing useful and meaningful evaluation and feedback\, supporting workers through traumatic critical incidents\, all carry potential ethical dilemmas that are difficult but at least familiar.  Sorting through the ethical conflicts of social networking\, helping workers ethically integrate spirituality into social work practice\, maintaining client service amid diminishing budgets and increasingly complex policy/practice changes are less familiar but equally challenging. This workshop will explore with participant involvement these ethical risks to supervision. Ideas will be shared on how to avoid potential pitfalls as well as possible solutions worth examining. \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will reflect on their own supervisory practices to examine potential ethical challenges that may be inherent in their work; identify social work ethical standards that apply to supervision; gain ideas from fellow participants about how to manage ethical dilemmas they may encounter in supervision; and increase their understanding of the ethical challenges unique to modern social work supervision.

SUMMARY:NPQ Webinar: Executive Transitions
DESCRIPTION:BoardSource\, NPQ\, and Raffa\, P.C. Are Proud to Present . . .\nA Complimentary\, 4-Part Webinar Series on \nExecutive Transitions: Critical Guidance for Boards and Executives (Whether a Transition Is Imminent or Not)\nRecent research indicates that nonprofit CEOs are aging in place—that is\, that approximately 40 percent have been in their jobs for over ten years\, and a majority are over 50 years old. This translates to a significant potential for turnover\, whether planned or unplanned. With that turnover of longstanding execs or even founders come opportunities but also real and serious risks . . . to reputation\, organizational relationships\, and—generally—the sustainability of your organization. \nHow do you find the right match and set the right table so that you can attract and keep the leader your organization needs for its best possible future? \nExecutives should be able to move out of leadership with the strategic and management capacities of the organization robust and vibrant and broadly held. Succession planning and executive transition\, done well\, deliver this. \nThis series of webinars involves some of NPQ’s most expert authors on the issue\, addresses the components of good succession planning and transitions\, from deepening the leadership “bench” to creating exit agreements. \nWebinar #1  The End Game: An Organizational Sustainability Framework for Executive Transitions \nMarch 31\, 1:30–2:30 pm EST \nPresenters: Ruth McCambridge\, Editor in Chief Nonprofit Quarterly and Tom Adams\, Director of Sustainability\, Succession and Transition Planning\, Raffa P.C. \nThis session will define some terms associated with succession planning and executive transition\, and will take a quick look at the variables involved in various scenarios. Additionally\, we will discuss what part succession planning plays in nonprofit sustainability. What are the factors that need to be attended to for the organization not to lose ground during a transition\, and how should these generally be approached? What are appropriate and inappropriate end goals for an executive transition? Among the topics that will be addressed are the role organizational culture plays in transitions and the importance of using the moment to examine your enterprise model\, strategic directions\, and the leadership competencies needed for success. \nYou will be able to sign up for the entire exclusive four-part webinar series: \n\nWebinar #2  CEO Confidential: Making\, Communicating\, and Implementing Your Organizational Exit  (April 28\, 2:30–3:30 pm EST)\nWebinar #3  The Common (and Sometimes Pernicious) Traps in Executive Transitions (May 19\, 1:30–2:30 pm EST)\nWebinar #4  Preparing for the Inevitable: The Board’s Role in Succession Planning (June 16\, 1:30–2:30 pm EST)\n\nMake sure to sign up today\, and NPQ will send instructions on how to join the session!

SUMMARY:WVNPA Webinar - Funding Rural America: Finding New Grants for Small Communities
DESCRIPTION:When has it ever been easy to secure funding for rural communities? Is there a way to level the playing field so rural nonprofits as well as small towns and counties/boroughs can compete for both government and private sector grants? What are the other options for financially supporting a rural project whether you are a nonprofit or local government? Are collaborative efforts worth the effort? And\, of course the biggest question: Who is funding rural America? These\, and other relevant questions\, along with current trends affecting rural funding will be addressed in this webinar presented by Cynthia Adams\, CEO of GrantStation.\n90 minutes\, plus 30 minutes for questions and answers. \nAbout the Presenter \nCynthia Adams has spent the past 40 years helping nonprofit organizations raise the money needed to do their good work. Many of her early efforts centered on raising funds to set aside wilderness areas in Alaska. In 1990 she started her first company\, the Alaska Funding Exchange. This endeavor served as the testing ground for a national company\, GrantStation\, which opened its Internet doors in the fall of 2001. Cindy built this business because she believes that grantseeking requires a thorough understanding of the variety and scope of grantmakers and sound knowledge of the philanthropic playing field. Her life’s work has been to level that playing field\, creating an opportunity for all nonprofit organizations to access the wealth of grant opportunities across the U.S. and throughout the world. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent management for Funding Rural America: Finding New Grants for Small Communities powered by Eventbrite\n\nFor those registering online\, we apply a 8.5% convenience fee to cover the processing cost of providing this service to you. SUMMARY:WVNPA Webinar - Government Grants and Contracts: Getting Reimbursement for Your Nonprofit's Indirect Costs
DESCRIPTION:The new reforms make clear that a nonprofit’s indirect costs are legitimate expenses that need to be reimbursed and that nonprofit organizations receive at least partial reimbursement of their indirect costs from states\, local governments\, and other pass-through entities for services they perform under federal awards.\nNew federal rules aren’t just for nonprofits with federal grants. Whether your nonprofit receives funds directly from a federal agency or federal funds are mixed into your state and local contracts and grants (which you may not even be aware of)\, the new rules from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) went into affect at the end of December and apply to you.  Most notably\, the OMB Uniform Guidance  makes clear that state and local governments are required to reimburse you at least a portion of your nonprofit’s indirect costs (sometimes called overhead or administrative costs) when federal funds are involved. But\, this is not the only change nonprofits need to be aware of to ensure governments pay their fair share of the costs. To maintain good standing\, nonprofits must also be aware of and comply with other changes as well. \nJoin us for a one-hour webinar where you’ll learn: \n\nWhat the major changes in the OMB Uniform Guidance are that will affect your organization;\nWhat your organization needs to do to take advantage of and comply with the new rules;\nWhat you can do to ensure state and local governments implement the changes as OMB intended.\n\nThis webinar will be presented by David Thompson\, Vice President of Public Policy\, and Beth Bowsky\, Policy Specialist – Government-Nonprofit Contracting\, both at the National Council of Nonprofits. For more information about the changes\, visit: \nhttp://www.councilofnonprofits.org/public-policy/omb-guidance-indirect-costs. \nBring your questions– Beth and David will be happy to address them. \n\n\n\n\nOnline Ticketing for Government Grants and Contracts: Getting Reimbursement for Your Nonprofit’s Indirect Costs powered by Eventbrite\n\nOr\, if you prefer\, you can print and mail your registration:\nMail-in registration form

SUMMARY:WVU: Creating Public Value for Your Agency or Organization
DESCRIPTION:Allison Nichols\, Ed.D.\, Clinical Extension Professor and Evaluation Specialist\, \nWest Virginia University Extension \nCEUs: 3 Social Work hours; 3 CECNPM hours (Special Topics/Electives) \nRegistration Fee: $35 (Early bird rate of $31.50 by October 17\, 2014) \nTarget Audience:  All levels of practitioners \nAs private\, state and national funds become harder to obtain for our programs\, it has become increasingly important to be able to articulate the “public value” of our work.  So often we measure the “private value” of our efforts – how it affects individuals — but fail to determine how our programs benefit the public as a whole.  This workshop will help you learn how to identify the public value of your work and write and disseminated effective public value statements and stories. \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to distinguish between private and public value; have determined the public value of their own program; have written one or more public value statements and/or stories; and have ideas for communicating public value to their stakeholders.

SUMMARY:Volunteer WV: Strength-Based Grant Writing
DESCRIPTION:[WVNPA Members save $50. Read below for details.]\nStrength-Based Grant Writing is intended to help build new capacity for nonprofit organizations. How do we use our strengths to get results?\nWhat are our stakeholders asking for? How can we reframe challenges to be seen as exciting opportunities?
