SUMMARY:GuideStar Webinar: Ask the Nonprofit Lawyer: Everything You Wanted to Know about Nonprofit Copyrights and Trademarks
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nRegister Now \n\nToday’s digital world requires proactive measures to enforce and manage valuable content — as well as to avoid infringing others’ rights. Many nonprofit executives don’t fully appreciate the often counter-intuitive intricacies and nuances of intellectual property law\, as well as the pitfalls that abound for failing to proactively address them. On the trademark side\, from clearing to registering marks\, to managing\, licensing and enforcing them — both domestically and internationally – there’s an abundance of knowledge and know-how to digest. On the copyright side\, new technologies bring about new challenges with protecting rights in and avoiding liability from misusing others’ copyrightable works (or failing to sufficiently protect your own rights). Moreover\, the role of volunteers in the nonprofit setting poses its own set of intellectual property challenges. \nIn this Q&A-driven webinar\, you’ll have the opportunity to submit your own questions to one of the nation’s leading nonprofit attorneys from the Venable law firm as he walks you through the essentials\, highlights common traps and pitfalls\, discusses best practices in the nonprofit community\, and most importantly\, gives you the thoughtful\, practical\, real-life guidance and tips that you need to know in order to protect your nonprofit in the U.S. and overseas\, as well as optimize and capitalize on your nonprofit’s intellectual property. \nPresenters\nJeffrey S. Tenenbaum\, Esq.\, Partner and Chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Practice\, Venable LLP\nJeffrey Tenenbaum chairs Venable’s Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group. He is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit attorneys and is a highly accomplished author\, lecturer\, and commentator on nonprofit legal matters. Based in the firm’s Washington\, DC office\, Mr. Tenenbaum counsels his clients on the broad array of legal issues affecting charities\, foundations\, trade and professional associations\, think tanks\, advocacy groups\, and other nonprofit organizations. He regularly represents clients before Congress and federal and state regulatory agencies; in connection with government investigations\, enforcement actions\, and litigation; and in dealing with the media. He also has served as an expert witness in several court cases on nonprofit legal issues. \nMr. Tenenbaum was the 2006 recipient of the American Bar Association’s Outstanding Nonprofit Lawyer of the Year Award\, and was an inaugural (2004) recipient of the Washington Business Journal’s Top Washington Lawyers Award. He was one of only seven “Leading Lawyers” in the Not-for-Profit category in the prestigious 2012 Legal 500 rankings\, one of only eight in the 2013 rankings\, one of only nine in the 2014 rankings\, and one of only ten in the 2015 rankings. Mr. Tenenbaum was recognized in 2013 as a Top Rated Lawyer in Tax Law by The American Lawyer and Corporate Counsel. He was the 2015 recipient of the New York Society of Association Executives’ Outstanding Associate Member Award\, the 2004 recipient of The Center for Association Leadership’s Chairman’s Award\, and the 1997 recipient of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives’ Chairman’s Award. Mr. Tenenbaum was listed in the 2012-16 editions of The Best Lawyers in America for Non-Profit/Charities Law\, and was selected for inclusion in the 2014 and 2015 editions of Washington DC Super Lawyers in the Nonprofit Organizations category. In 2011\, he was named as one of Washington\, DC’s “Legal Elite” by SmartCEO Magazine. He was a 2008-09 Fellow of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia and is AV Peer-Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Tenenbaum started his career in the nonprofit community by serving as Legal Section manager at the American Society of Association Executives\, following several years working on Capitol Hill as a legislative assistant. \nCody Cassady\, Marketing & Outreach Coordinator\, GuideStar USA\, Inc.\nAs GuideStar’s Marketing & Outreach Coordinator\, Cody is responsible for assisting in the management of advertising and marketing relationships and managing GuideStar’s extensive webinar program. An upcoming nonprofit accounting and finance professional\, Cody comes to GuideStar with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida. \n\n\n\n \nJeffrey S. SUMMARY:Strength-Based Grant Writing
DESCRIPTION:Strength-Based Grant Writing is intended to help build new capacity for nonprofit organizations. This hands-on\, intensive training will help aspiring and experienced grant writers approach grant writing from a strength-based perspective. Strength-based grant writing seeks collaboration\, shared understanding\, and commitment to action by the organization and the larger community in identifying opportunities for change and new direction. At the end of this training\, participants will not only understand all the components of a grant application\, but will also have a new way of looking appreciatively at what works in their organization and community. \nMore than 350 people have attending this workshop since its inception. One participant recently wrote: \nI had the absolute pleasure of participating in your Strength Based Grant Writing Workshop this past October. I cannot express to you how extraordinary and worthwhile I found the entire process. \nSo far\, my organization has been approved for two of the grants that I have written – there is no doubt in my mind this would not have been feasible without the tools and knowledge I gained through your workshop.” \nCome and join the growing network of nonprofit professionals approaching grant writing from this unique and energizing perspective. Registration is limited to the first 50 people. \nWe will be asking questions such as: \n\nWhat are our organization’s strengths? What can we build on? What makes us unique? How do we use our strengths to get results?\nWhat are our stakeholders asking for? How can we reframe challenges to be seen as exciting opportunities? What new skills do we need to move forward?\nWhat do we care deeply about? What do we want more of? What strategic initiatives would support our aspirations?\nWhat meaningful measures would indicate that we are on track to achieving our goals?\n\nWhat resources are needed to implement our most vital projects? \n  \nWVU Continuing Education Certificate in Nonprofit Management \nThis training is approved for the WVU Continuing Education Certificate in Nonprofit Management. All hours completed during the three days can be counted towards the certification. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation. \nTuesday\, June 9\, 2015\, 9 am–noon\, CraftWorks at Cool Spring\, 1469 Lloyd Rd\, Charles Town\, WV 25414 \nOLIVIA HUTTON is one of our most popular speakers. Since beginning her accounting career at Yount Hyde & Barbour in 1998\, Olivia has focused on providing financial reporting services to nonprofit organizations\, especially private schools\, colleges\, universities and foundations. In addition to conducting audits and reviews\, she has helped clients prepare Form 990\, 990-T and 990-PF informational returns. As a member of the Nonprofit and Governmental Services team\, Olivia has been named a Super CPA by Virginia Business magazine in the nonprofit/governmental field as well as the “Young CPAs” field. \nWorkshop Description\nDuring the past few years\, the IRS brought the idea of good governance to the forefront of discussion among charitable organizations. Sweeping changes have taken place and the IRS Form 990 has been revised in an effort to make certain all nonprofits comply with the law. Why is the IRS worried about governance issues and requiring organizations to report more information on Form 990? What are the primary issues that the IRS cares about? What do these issues mean for you\, your board and your organization? \nPlan to spend a late spring morning with us in Jefferson County at the NET Workshop “Good Governance for 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organizations and the IRS Form 990.” Join CPA Olivia Hutton\, Principal of Yount Hyde & Barbour from 9 am until noon for a discussion regarding what road the IRS (and Congress) may take in enforcing good governance procedures\, and how to protect charitable organizations from IRS good governance examinations. In the end\, this workshop will help you understand the emphasis on good governance and prepare for the more in depth reporting requirements for Form 990. \nLearning Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will have a better understanding of the emphasis on good governance for nonprofit organizations and be better prepared for the more in-depth reporting requirements for Form 990. \nRegistration: $20 per person \nRegister online: NET Registration Form \nPlease pay via Paypal\, or mail your check to EWVCF\, 229 E Martin St.\, Suite 4\, Martinsburg\, WV 25401.
