Do you love conflict? For most of us, the answer to that question is “absolutely not!” However, whenever you work with people, conflict is going to be a part of your professional life. Each of us has the power to reduce our anxiety about conflict and actively engage it as a force for personal, professional, and organizational growth. This introductory level workshop will give participants theory, skills, and strategies to understand conflict better and manage it more effectively.
Participants will learn about: principled negotiation, family systems theory, the various conflict management styles and how to decide which to use in a given situation, and how to decide when to employ mediation or other external resources. Participants will also engage in hands-on activities to build skills such as active listening, re-framing, and facilitation that can be applied to conflicts in various situations and settings. Participants will leave the workshop with a better understanding of their own conflict management styles and skills that can improve their effectiveness in supervision of staff and volunteers, collaboration with colleagues, work with or on a board, and even in your personal relationships.
Cost: $25 Refreshments will be provided. Scholarship funding can be requested.
Intended Audience: Executive directors; staff members; board members; volunteers; interns
